Scheduled Course - Utah Steep Skiing and Ski Mountaineering for ages 13-19 Camp

Youth Ski Mountaineering Camp

This is a fun, challenging 3-day, field-based seminar designed to introduce young athletes to backcountry ski and snowboard mountaineering. Open to ages 13-19, this training on Presidents Day Weekend is oriented toward technical ski objectives. Participants may climb and ride incredible peaks and couloirs in the Wasatch Mountains, such as Wolverine Cirque, Toledo Peak and Mt. Superior, depending on weather, snow conditions, etc.

Techniques covered include:

  • Avalanche hazard evaluation and mitigation
  • Proper use of ice axe, boot and ski crampons
  • Rope use, knots, anchors and rappelling
  • Belayed climbing and skiing
  • Reading snow and navigating terrain
  • Steep skiing skills

The program is offered in mid-winter when the Utah snowpack is typically deep and strong enough for ski mountaineering objectives.
