Canyoneering Skills

This class will teach you how to assess and use canyoneering anchors, how to rappel, how to ascend a rope, how the canyoneering grading system works, and basic movement for scrambling in canyons.

Description:

Utah is world renowned for its amazing technical canyons. Learning some basic canyoneering skills will allow you to safely descend many of these beautiful canyons. This class is for those with little or no climbing or canyoneering experience. This course will help you get to know and understand basic canyoneering gear and how to use it properly and efficiently.

  • Safely use a helmet and harness
  • Understand required canyoneering gear
  • Safely rappel with an ATC and figure 8 device
  • Ascend a rope using friction knots or devices
  • Gain tools for assessing rappel anchors
  • Learn how the canyoneering grading system works
  • Improve basic movement required in canyons

This course usually starts around 8AM.

UMA reserves the right to cancel or shorten the clinic if fewer than 2 participants register.

Level

Beginner; no canyoneering experience required.

Fitness: Fit able to easily hike 1 mile on variable, uneven terrain (at 7k-10k' elevation) from the trailhead to access rock climbing crags.
