What Our Guests and Students Say

  • Everything from start to finish with Utah Mountain Adventures went smoothly, thanks to our guide, Ben Farrar, who put together and executed our excellent adventure. Ben asked all the right questions to understand what we wanted from our backcountry trip, and made a plan that met our needs and was adaptive to the conditions. He kept us moving at a pace to achieve our objectives and had backup plans to do more if there was time and desire, or make changes if the conditions or terrain were not favorable. He provided just the right amount of support and tips along the way. And it was just such a pleasure to hang out with Ben! We were grateful that somehow he managed to take photos and videos along the way and shared them with us at the end of the day. 10 out of 10! (and that is saying something in a very low snow year)

  • Everything about our experience with UMA was fantastic! We arranged a back country ski/snowboarding day for my son and husband during our vacation. Their guide, Cody, was extremely knowledgable and safe, yet very fun. He provided all the necessary equipment so we never needed to make an extra trip to pick up gear. The office staff was friendly and responsive and made everything easy for us. It was an unforgettable experience and one I'd highly recommend.

  • My husband and I did a ski mountaineering clinic and a private trad climbing course through UMA. Both experiences were outstanding. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and personable. We learned tons of information on safe ski/climbing techniques and are now able to venture into steeper terrain with confidence. I would highly recommend investing in a clinic through UMA if you are wanting to up your outdoor adventure game.

Our LGBTQ+ Backcountry Mentorship Series is intended to build community and offer a space for LGBTQ+ identifying people to feel welcomed. The goals of this program is to build confidence, encourage independence in backcountry skiing and splitboarding and encourage more diversity in the backcountry.

Everyone stands to benefit from a more diverse outdoors, and this mentorship program is one way to improve our broader backcountry ski and splitboard community. By building connections and relationships within the LGBTQ+ community, participants can feel comfortable being themselves. Better learning outcomes are often associated with affinity groups like this one, and we hope to encourage safe, lifelong learning in the backcountry.

Mentorship Series Topics & Objectives
  • Dial in your backcountry setup and review what to bring a what not to
  • Learn how to stay warm, yet not overheat on the skin track
  • Learn how to be a leader and a solid backcountry companion
  • Get feedback, practice and hone your avalanche rescue skills
  • Methodize your tour planning: use systems to help formulate options and select appropriate tour plans (avi and weather forecasts, red light/green light terrain, etc.)
  • Set realistic goals per tour with guides and the group
  • Avalanche skills, as appropriate (snowpits, on-the-go tests)
  • Evolve your avalanche risk and terrain decision-making skills in relation to the changing snowpack
  • Dial in skinning technique: kickturns, pressure breathing, etc.
  • Learn to set an efficient, low-risk skin track
  • Develop your downhill movement skills in various snow types
  • Test your limits: steeps, trees, couloirs, distance and vertical
  • Work as a team, build each other up, be your best self, get fit, explore new terrain and celebrate being out in nature

Note: Guides plan to cover the skills and objectives listed above as indicated by current weather, avalanche and snow conditions. For example, we don’t want to waste a low-hazard powder day on rescue drills. Primary objectives will be announced a day or 2 before each tour.
