Four-Day Wasatch Rock Camp

The Wasatch Mountains in Utah Mountain Adventures' backyard offer unparalleled access to excellent granite, quartzite and limestone for crack, face, sport and traditional climbing. This fun, adventurous class is designed to rapidly develop a climber with some gym or outdoor experience into a competent and confident outdoor climber. Participants should be fit, possess a desire to learn and have some mountain experience. However, high-level rock climbing proficiency is not a pre-requisite; it is an outcome.

Day 1: Basics Review and Intro to Multi-pitch

  • Review belaying, lowering and techniques for efficient movement on rock
  • Start with moderate multi-pitch climb like Reservoir Ridge
  • Follow with intermediate multi-pitch like Steort's Arete
  • Clean the protection remove anchors and climb as a team
  • Manage ropes on ledges
  • Belay a leader and a follower from a ledge
  • Descend via pre-rigged, multi-pitch rappel

Day 2: Anchors and Protection

  • Cover all aspects of anchors and placing protection (pro)
  • Learn knots and hitches used in anchors
  • Equalize bolted anchors; clean them and lower or rappel off
  • Evaluate natural features (trees, boulders, flakes, etc.)
  • Practice placing stoppers, cams, slings, etc.
  • Build and equalize natural-pro anchors
  • Learn with immediate instructor feedback

Day 3: Movement on Rock and Crack Climbing Technique

  • Improve security and efficiency scaling various cracks and slabs
  • Tape hands for crack climbing
  • Learn various types of hand, finger and foot jams
  • Build stemming and lie-back technique
  • Get pointers and demonstrations from expert instructor

Day 4: Advanced Multi-pitch Climb

  • Put all the skills together with a harder multi-pitch climb
  • Utilize crack, face and friction climbing skills
  • Belay and rappel from hanging belay
  • Route selection will be based on students skills, goals and current conditions

UMA reserves the right to cancel or shorten the clinic if fewer than 3 participants register.

Intermediate. Experience with belaying and top rope climbing recommended
