Mountaineering > Scheduled Courses > Mountaineering Overnight Clinic
During a two-day overnight seminar, learn mountaineering skills and snow camping in preparation for Rainier and Denali or other expedition climbing.
Description:
The guide will check equipment, review efficient loading of an overnight pack, and lead group on skis or snowshoes to a camp at or near 10,000 feet. En route, participants will learn route selection, travel protocols for avalanche terrain, pace and how to climb on skis or snowshoes with a load. A solid, weatherproof winter camp will be established using deadman anchors and snow walls. The instructor will review the use of ice axe, crampons, and ropes, and lead a self-arrest practice session. In the evening, participants will learn how to run stoves, melt snow for water, cook, and stay warm and comfortable in the high altitude, winter environment. The second day will likely include the ascent of a spectacular 11,000-foot Wasatch peak using crampons, ice axe and ropes. Participants will learn how to stay safe in exposed, alpine terrain and climb efficiently on moderately difficult snow and rock.
