Learn safe travel in avalanche terrain and recognition of weather, snow pack and terrain factors contributing to avalanche hazard. No previous avalanche education necessary.
Review and expand upon material learned in Level I. Learn to identify snow crystal types and processes leading to them; how to record and interpret information gained from snow pits, stability tests, weather and other factors contributing to snow strength. Practice complex, multiple-beacon rescues.
Introduction to rescue skills and avalanche beacon searches, route finding, snow pack evaluation and minimizing exposure to hazards. Consists of an evening lecture and full-day field session.
Add a day of backcountry skiing or snowboarding to the Avalanche Awareness class. Learn how to use skins and descend variable off-piste snow and terrain.
